The Groupware Competence Center (GCC), founded in 1991 at the University of Paderborn, has its focus on research and development of collaborative technologies at the computer based workplace. Effective results of research, projects, and related technology transfer with partners in business have been software prototypes for business solutions. Many prototypes have worked out being the seeds for spin-off companies which based their product and service portfolio on concepts & architectures developed at GCC. Examples are "IBM Lotus Workflow" and process & office software components built in business solutions of PAVONE AG's software portfolio.
Current main research, project, and cooperation areas pertain to: workplace design, activity exploration & management, document & knowledge management, federated & hybrid architectures for databases (e.g. NSFDB2) and portals, process oriented business solutions for SMBs. GCC is fostering a business application centered research and technology transfer approach. Thus, industry de facto standard middleware technologies play an important role. GCC has the unusual prestigiousstatus (i.e. for an academic institution) of "IBM Premier Business Partner". This is mainly due to regular certification programs for IBM software brands: Lotus (Notes/Domino, Workplace, Sametime) and WebSphere. These programs are being offered and appreciated by students as an integrated and intertwined add-on to their regular curriculum, project assignments, and theses in business information system studies.
