ECIS 2004 The European Information Systems Profession in the Global Networking Environment

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will play an increasing and essential strategic role in the present society of networks. That role comprises coordinating activities and keeping interorganisational groups together. This demands a very high level of service and top quality ICT.

Over the last decade, as leading companies have moved from multinational to global operations, there has been a clear-cut trend towards their globalization. There is a more recent trend in the increasing demand to link locally customized services with the economies of the scale that result from worldwide operations. One management challenge is to cope with this new customer need.

A competitive edge in this environment demands the integration of information technology potential with effective global logistics. Leading companies have already created integrated IT architectures to master their internal information flows, but there are still problems linked to customer service. Networking, joint ventures and mergers bring fresh challenges to the homogenization of the IT environment.

This challenging environment of continuous change processes both IS research and practical actions are needed. The theme of the conference is The European Information Systems Profession in the Global Environment. This theme brings into attention the European tradition and perspective on IS research, where human centred aspects are emphasized. It is, however, extremely important to have researchers from different continents to consider global networking phenomena.

Hosting this conference in Finland for the first time is of great importance for the Turku School of Economics and Business Administration. We are not alone, as the organization of the conference is actually a joint effort of the Finnish IS society. With all our experience we do our best to make this meeting both useful and interesting to all participants. International organizing and programme committees guarantee the global quality of all our efforts.

Finland is a country of early adoption and even pioneering use of information technology. We are known for our strong mobile phone industry and the development in it. It is, however, only one sector of our advanced utilization of information systems. In the conference we would like to offer an overall view of actions taken here as one example of the European profession.

The key themes and topics are chosen to cover the relevant aspects of traditional and new research areas. We invite researchers from different countries to submit papers into the conference. Our aim is to create an inspiring environment for global discussion on the role of IS/IT in our work and personal life. With your contribution we shall succeed!
