Current events:

My main research focus is Wide Area Workflow Management that spans across the legal and geographical boundaries of organizations. This is also the topic of my PHD dissertation.

The research project consists of two main parts:
The Wide Area GroupFlow System (WAGS) is based on the GroupFlow approach originated by Nastansky/Hilpert.
A special notion of workflow management was invented with GroupFlow: the Workflow Continuum that reaches from structured workflow management as known from others WFMSs until the open team architecture of groupware platforms.
The Wide Area GroupFlow System (WAGS) enhances the workflow capabilities of the GroupFlow approach with abilities to realize Wide Area Workflow Management across the boundaries of different organizations.

Personal background

My computing "career" began on the Macintosh platform. I did a lot of desktop publishing using Quark Xpress, Freehand, Illustrator, Photoshop and others to publish professional brochures and books. A second focus was the development of databases using 4thDimension and FileMakerPro. I financed my studies in industrial engineering and business computing as a computer trainer for DOS, Windows and Macintosh, teaching standard applications. Later I worked as an IT consultant in the fields of office computing, paper machinery industry and prepress industry.

At the University of Darmstadt, I combined a full study of mechanical engineering with a MBA-comparable degree. I did some research on computer-based image analysis and worked as IT consultant for an engineering company in Boston, MA. I then changed my focus to applied computer science and business computing and wrote my master thesis about Workflow Management in WANs.

Private interests

My foremost private interest is my wife and our children, so I try to spend as much time as possible with them. I have been practicing Hapkido, a corean martial art style, for about 10 years and I am hoping to establish a school of my own one day. Currently, I am teaching Shinson Hapkido in the Universities sports center.
Other activities are skiing which is not surprising because I grew up in the german Alps, bicycle riding, jogging or swimming. I have a strong interest in environmental protection, so whenever feasible I use public transportation instead of a car and try to do everything to live in harmony with nature, as much as that's possible in modern live.
